Video MIDEM 2013 @ Cannes finished

Finished my personel video MIDEM 2013 @ Cannes / France

Click here to view video on YouTube

Cannes, glamorous city in france. chic shops in the Rue d'Antibes and Boulevard Croisette, small streets in the old part of Cannes with small tourist shops, restaurants, shoes, perfume and boutiques.
January 2013 26 to 29: MIDEM 2013, annual music industry's event.

Stands from more than 70 countries, Austria included, can be visited, speakers can be heard, connections made. A four day event "for networking, deal-making, learning and concert. MIDEM is the place where music makers, cutting-edge technologies, brands and talent come together. Commenting on the 6,400 attendance, 7% down on 2012, MIDEM director Bruno Crolot noted, attendance this year reflected the current difficult economic climate in certain parts of the world, continued uncertainty as the music industry reinvents its business models and a tightening of public-spending budgets which has impacted on certain national pavillons..." as the MIDEM press release announces.

Music industry has overcome the download shock- I mean Napster and other platforms - and developed new business models.

I found an interesting article in the Billboard. Why Are You Going To MIDEM? by Ed Christman saying: The conference's shrinking attendance reflects the consolidation of the business but also sharpens its focus on new ideas. Ending up that the MIDEM is underestimated as a forum for exchanging ideas and experiences. He concludes with some wise words: If I have a penny and you have a penny and we exchange them, we each still have a penny. But if we exchange ideas, now we each have two ideas.

Reporters with video and photocameras all around. Business talks and shake hands. MIDEM is the place where the future starts.

My first event was listening to Julia Nunes, a US ukelele player, talking about their way to success. She has 50 million youtube views and some albums out but still is unsigned.
At the Basque stand I talked to Aleia. Interesting that this stand is separated from the spain stand. I read in the papers about the Basque separation movement.

Also seen at MIDEM
a silver MINI. What a dream car. a real mirror car.
And there was FORD. Hey, one moment, ford? i went to the representant and asked "what are you doing here? i would expect you to be in detroit" and then he showed me this.
he told me, when he was young he was so impressed by knight rider and now ford has implemented a music station in the automobile that can be controled by a watch on the wrist.
as a james bond fan i asked him if he has the licence to kill. No, he replied, and I don't need it.

NRJ Awards
On saturday evening there was the event "NRJ Awards". NRJ is a french radio station. The crowd started to scream when a boygroup stepped on the red carpet on the stairs of Palais des Festivals. It was "Matt Pokora", a french singer, famous in France. Some kids climbed up a fence to see their stars.

The Russian soul
In the streets I found a shop specialized on russian products. In the window I saw Champagne, caviar and other Russian products.
Russia also was present at MIDEM.
Evdokimov theatre, actually on tour in switzerland, perform shows like "divas", "Halloween", "Cabaret", "Evolution", "Disco", "Fairy Tales" and parody shows where they bring a lot of celebreties on stage, from Egyptian godess to "Lady Gaga". director Denis Boldyrev presented the colourful catalogue. russian events are so glamorous and russian music is so full of emotion.

Chocolate
I was shameless enough to collect cds from the stands. although i only took pop, rock and indie i collected .... see yourself. but it is so interesting to listen to music from blues from norway, k-pop from asia, rock from malaysia, and electronica from switzerland.
and that is not all. I took chocolate:
  • Chocolate from Switzerland
  • from Austria
  • from Lithuania
  • and from Russia
And that's still not all.
  • Green beans and tea from Taiwan
  • Chewing gum called "drumstick" from Germany
  • Not to forget: Rum from Barbados called "Mountain gay rum". Though I am not gay I will drink it.

Performances at MIDEM
Countries bring their stars on stage. Here a performance by DJ Spooky together with a female violinist from the Cannes Orchestra.

Rapunzel M.A.P.
From the top floor of palais des festival i heard a voice singing to guitar. And near the entrance to midem a singer performed songs. Rapunzel with long hair. Will she let her hair down for her lover? Anyway, Rapunzel singing live about love and longing for love.

My personel highlight
I met my friend Joey Welz, writer of Bill Haley's "Rock Around The Clock". We were talking about his past times and with a smile he said, he is a dinosaur. I asked him, T.Rex or raptor? He is over 70, but still working as radio promoter for his company located in Canada. Joey is still rocking aroung the clock.

20130201 Last day enjoying Cannes

Shopping salmon in supermarket InterMarche. The cashier girl had only one hand.
Purchased chocolate made with vanilla and looking like a cheese Camembert. Great gag.

Then smoking a cigar on Chateau de la Castre.

Returning to hotel. Transferring photos and videos from camera to pc.

Writing offtext for my MIDEM report on YouTube. Recording video and shooting pictures in the hotel room for this report. I need to be well prepared for my productions.

Working on a new recording, just starting with the refrain. Only an idea for song structure. It is a fast song about power and car race.

20130129 Last day at MIDEM

MIDEM - what's it all about?    ;-)

Emilien Moyon was speaking about revenue streams, that music business is more than creating a good master recording.

Later Howard George spoke about Marketing - Purpose Driven Marketing for Artists & Labels. He is the most controversy speaker at MIDEM. He looks like a slacky guy playing video games all night long, but his approach and his ideas about marketizing music were very interesting.
Howard George in action

While standing in the top floor of Palais des Festivals smoking my cigar I heard a female singer with her guitar performing at the Entrance of MIDEM. Rapunzel M.A.P. (long beautiful hair) was singing her songs via a small amp. Street singer on the beach in Cannes. What a performance.

Walking through the Riviera Hall I heard a singer. It was a live performance by Kaye Ree. A little relax in the late after noon.

20130128 Legal issues at MIDEM

The morning started with a discussion of GEMA about copyright in Europe. The interesting thing was that industry (Dr. habil. Christian Baierle, Roba Music Publishing) needs a revision of the regulations urgently while politicians (Ansgar Heveling, CDU-politician and member of the German Bundestag; Andy Baum, former Vorstands- & Aufsichtsratsmitglied of AKM / Austria) said that rushing makes no sense. Message on the bottom line: we are willing to work out a solution.
GEMA (Germany) about their compensation system, what is so special and unique.
5: Ansgar Heveling, Member of the German Bundestag;
3: Alexandra Thein, Member of the European Parliament;
6: Andy Baum, Austrian Singer & Songwriter;
1: Dr. habil. Christian Baierle, Roba Music Publishing;
2: Prof. Dr. Enjott Schneider, Composer and Chairman of the Supervisory Board of GEMA;
4: Presenter: Manfred-Gillig Degrave, Editor in Chief, MusikWoche;

I went to the Barbados stand. I opened conversation with the words: "Congratulations to Rihanna!". The representant handled me a USB stick looking like wooden and a little bottle of "Mountain Gay Rum". I asked if I could drink that rum if I am not gay. Laughter and photo. Pleased to meet them.
The afternoon started with attorneys about legal situation of rights management. Interesting for me: interviews. In France, Eric Lauvaux said, a signed agreement for even one sentence is needed. James Kendrick (USA) said, the same in USA. I usually don't let agreements sign. I usually ask people if I can use the interview for tv and online and record their spoken agree. Well, attorneys were shaking heads. I think, signing an agreement for interviews is necessary for big acts.
Barbados is proud of Rihanna

Daniel Glass moderated a discussion about cooperation of agencies and brands. At the end he had an interesting question: In these kind of deals who has the power? Surprising answers: europeans said: attorney, brand, label. Camille Hackney (Atlantic Records, USA) said: it's the audience.
Nice lens flare effect without photoshop in the afternoon sun

Very interesting presentation of K-Pop. After this I went to the Korean stand to get K-Pop music and they handled me an album by KARA, a korean girl band.
K-Pop goes global (l>r): Kellee Maize (USA), Drunken Tiger (South Korea), T Yoon Mirae (South Korea), Bizzy (South Korea)

The day ended up with a performance by DJ Spooky (Miller Paul D.) together with a female violinist from the Cannes Orchestra.

20130127 Meeting the Russian Soul at MIDEM

Classical Music is present at MIDEM. I like to go to the stand of Kremlin Palace and take Russian chocolate. It tastes so different to our chocolate in Middle Europe.

Then I went to Switzerland stand to take Swiss chocolate. Swiss chocolate is famous. Right of this stand ther eis the stand of our country Austria. I take a cd with latest Austrian music to know what's going on and chocolate. I am not interested in talks, I don't travel to Cannes to talk to people I could talk to in Vienna.
chocolate and more...

And then I found the stand of EVDOKIMOV theatre, a theatre from Moskow with various parody shows. So colourful, so emotional. They have theme shows like "Halloween", "Cabaret", "Fairy Tales" or "Disco" and parody shows where they bring a lot of celebreties on stage, from Egyptian godess to "Lady Gaga". I spoke with director Denis Boldyrev. Actually they are on tour in Europe heading to Geneve / Switzerland. Oh, Russian women are so mmmmh. Try it and you know what I mean.

And again I met Joey Welz, writer of Bill Haley's "Rock Around The Clock". We were talking about his past times and with a smile he said, he is a dinosaur. I asked him, T.Rex or raptor? He is over 70, but still working as radio promoter for his company located in Canada.
Perry Scott talked about visual commerce and the importance of pictures. He mentioned Flickr, Instagram and other platforms. I asked him about his opinion of Google's Picasa. He did not know this platform in connection with social media and music promotion and asked me about it. In my opinion it is a nice platform for families to upload photos for grandma, but not applicable for bands and music promotion.
Rocking around the clock with Joey Welz

Lugger Victor presented his company MyMajorCompany, a France based crowdfunding platform. I asked him about the integration of languages in their website. Actually there are two languages available, french and english. Specially in Europe that is a big challenge, there are - different to USA - many different languages.

20130126 First day @ MIDEM

MIDEM is a annual event in Cannes / France in January. Stands from more than 70 countries, Austria included, can be visited, speakers can be heard. A four day event
"for networking, deal-making, learning and concert. MIDEM is the place where music makers, cutting-edge technologies, brands and talent come together. Commenting on the 6,400 attendance, 7% down on 2012, MIDEM director Bruno Crolot noted, attendance this year reflected the current difficult economic climate in certain parts of the world, continued uncertainty as the music industry reinvents its business models and a tightening of public-spending budgets which has impacted on certain national pavillons..." (Source: MIDEM press release).
By the way, also seen there opera star Christa Ludwig.
Austria is present at MIDEM

Julia Nunes, a US singer, spoke about her carreer. 50mio views on YouTue is impressive. Though, or maybe because, she plays an unusual instrument, the ukelele. I asked her about her social media activities and she replied that she is active on the main platforms like facebook, twitter, instagram and tumblr.

At noon I went to MIDEM business center for going online and write text about MIDEM.
Sitting at the business center at MIDEM. Working online till next event.

At the Conference room Vivien Lewit from YouTube announced new features on YouTube like integration of new platforms and talked about cooperation and partnership. One question was about financing content. Youtube replied, that youTube is a platform and not sponsoring any content. I think with 70 hours content uploaded hourly YouTube has no need for financing content.

At the Basque stand I talked to Aleia. Interesting that this stand is seperated from the Spain stand. Well, proud people from the north of Spain. I took a sample cd with Basque music.
I collected cds from many countries like Finland, Taiwan (together with green beans), Spain, Sweden, Malaysia, Switzerland (and Swiss chacolate), Austria. Russia presented classical music, but I took Russian chocolate (It's only Russian chocolate, but I like it, like it, like it).

Aleia from Basque land / Spain presenting proudly the BASQUE music

Also seen at MIDEM: Ford and Mini. Say what? I would expect these companies in Detroit, but not at the MIDEM in Cannes. Automobile company Ford showing new electronics and music devices in the Ford car. A representant told me, when he was young he was so impressed by Knight Rider. And now Ford has implemented a music station in the automobile that can be controled by a watch on the wrist. He showed me a James Bond-like watch controlling a music player. I asked him if he has the Licence to Kill. "No", he replied, "and I don't need it."

And there was a silver Mini Cooper with interesting reflections on the auto lacquer.

I found an interesting article in the Billboard. 20130125 Arriving at Nice, moving to Cannes

Leaving Vienna in snow, arriving in Nice in sunny weather. At the window seat a young American who pictured Alps and Nice with his iPad during the flight. I told him how beautiful Nice is and that we approach the airport by flying over the bay of Nice. That up in the hills of Chimiez there is the museum of Marc Cagall, a Russian born painter. And that there is a big Russian community in Nice with a Russian cathedral (basilica). And that a rumour says, that there are many Russians with big money and one good reason for having left their country.

Going to Cannes via bus, 17,50Euro one way.
Power Station seen on the bus transfer Nice Airport - Cannes

Hotel is ok, kitchen included. First way to "Tabac" to buy cigars. Cigars are cheaper than in Austria. Preparing for MIDEM, what to visit, making plans. In the evening going to InterMarche (supermarket) to buy salmon. I have it every day in Vienna. Why not here?

Shopping in Cannes

Walking on this sunny day in the City of Cannes on Boulevard de la Croisette down to harbour Port Pierre Cator. At the end there is a tower and a woman figure on a rock. The yacht charter services maintain the yachts in these days in cold January.

Then visiting exhibition in Espace Miramar with paintings by a painter named German. In Centre d'Art la Malmaison I saw painting by Ladislas Kijno, some awful, some interesting. Both buildings are at the La Croisette.

This Camembert is made of chocolate - cheezy!
As the year before I went to a Chocolate shop and purchased a Camembert. It looks like cheese, but it is made of chocolate.

Now to Rue d'Antibes, of course more pretty in summer. Even here on this elegant shopping street there are victims of the economic crisis. Some shops, more than one, have selloff because they close down. For tourists all is written in english and sometimes also in french. So I became to know about these problems.

Cigars: I usually smoke Vasco da Gama / Sumatra. The price here 5,50 Euro per pack, 5 cigars inside. In Cologne it was 4,20 and in Vienna 7,00 Euro. Big taxes on tobacco in Austria (is that good or bad?).

Last day Midem

Today rain in Cannes. No public transport, no busses in Cannes. Woman in tourism-bureaux said: "because it is raining, possible we have snow". I could not believe what I heard. Is Cannes a third-world-village?

Well, after the last word was spoken, all giveaways given away and beamers are turned off I made a Midem-roundup for me.

Some people I spoke to at Midem:
  • Jack Rubinacci, singer/songwriter from Norway. He handed me a CD and info.
  • Prince Kestamg, musician from Cameroon (wow, what a long way to Midem). When we were shot for the photo he took out his sunglasses. My cynical comment: All for the image!
    Prince Kestamg
  • Daniele Bartels, Napster director, Fankfurt / Germany
  • Charles J Tan, musician working in Singapore and Australia
  • Mayka Mei, Social media expert from San Francisco. I will contact her for sending me the handouts of her presentation. Very interesting.
    Mayka Mei
  • Hyatt Ariel, social media expert, where I had a one-on-one talk after her presentation

First day at Midem

Technicians make sure that the presentation
(not in picture) is perfect

Snapshot at MIDEM

Rain in Cannes, guys selling umbrellas

Real freaks never take a break

Rain in Cannes!

I like the stylish toilets
at Palais de Festivals

Stressy people rush from one event to another
between the stands at MIDEM
At Midem in Palais de Festivals et des Congres as well as in Riviera hall. Both buildings are connected one level under ground. Every country of this world is represented, even Austria. Some large companies have a single stand. Noise, people talking around me. At the stands business talks, maybe million-dollar-deals and - what modern term - networking. Musicians connect with producers, songwriter with publishers. Smart businessmen, stressed assistants, smiling representants, and a few "also-there".

Like last year I took a lot of CDs. Music from all parts of the world. Indierock from Chile, folkmusic from Finland, rock from Taiwan.

Presentations, interviews and presentations from 10am to 6pm with 1.5 hours break, but real freaks never take a break. All events are in english of course. Outside it is raining. At the Palais de Festivals guys sell umbrellas. Inside busy people running from one stand to another, from one event to another.

A man walking in front of me lost a busness card. I picked it up and gave it to him. After thanking we had a short talk starting with "who are you" and "where are you from". It was Charles J Tan, musician from Australia. And we exchanged business cards. He was laughing when I told him that some people think that we have the kangaroos and they have Mozart.

I have to stop a little my destructive sense of humour. When someone handles me a businesscard I want to handle mine to him with the words "here my revenge". But not everybody is cool enough to understand the joke. On the other hand it might happen that he will remember specially on me, the guy speaking with this non-US-accent and that strange communication. However, let's rock the world. Only James Bond lives twice.

I am so tired in the evening, my head is buzzing. Words like "business model" or "marketing concept" ring like big bells in my head. After evening dining I fall into the bed and into dreams while tv is bubbling. Midem is too interesting to intellectually switch off or physically stay away.
